Iron Works
Options are endless with wrought iron
Whether it's part of the architectural structure, furniture, or a design element, wrought iron is in great demand by homeowners.
It's not surprising since the iron is as versatile as it is strong. Only the imagination places limits on its infinite uses.
Iron man Paul Elliott, owner of Golden Isles Ornamental Iron & Steel Works in Brunswick, said the popularity of wrought iron has grown substantially in the 10 years he's been in business.
He began by creating hooks for pots and pans and shepherd's hooks for hanging plants. With time, Elliott established trust and a good reputation by working with clients and contractors to create unique designs and patterns for their specific needs. Now he stays busy with requests for everything from balustrades, gates, and ornamental fencing to indoor and outdoor furniture to home accessories and accent pieces. He does residential and commercial work and has been contracted by schools and the military for special projects.
Elliott is acutely aware that customers can choose to use wood or stone in their decor rather than wrought iron, so he is fastidious about listening when the customer or contractor is explaining the project.
Artistic Expression - The physical aspects of rolling and welding iron can be quite a challenge and requires the use of expensive machinery and practiced techniques. But original work demands artistic vision as well.
For customers who request an original piece of iron work, Elliott typically draws something up on paper first to make certain it's what they want. Repeat customers often simply rely on his judgment concerning design decisions, giving Elliott complete artistic license.
When Ann Barnes of Signature Properties Group bought a home in the Commons subdivision on St. Simons Island more than a year ago, she worked closely with Elliott to create a lovely, unique balustrade for an interior stairway.
"I really like the look of wrought iron," she said. "I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted so we put our heads together and this was the result."
Mrs. Barnes uses wrought iron as interesting focal points in numerous areas of her home including a chandelier in the dining area, a planter in the kitchen, and a pair of faux finished sconces with wrought iron detailing in the foyer.
"It's so popular," she said. "And it's easy to find great little accent pieces."
Susie Smith of St. Simons Island had a slightly more challenging project in mind for Elliott. She contracted him to lower the half-walls in her home's central stairway and install wrought iron balustrades. Once the job was complete, spaces and rooms surrounding the stairway were transformed, appearing much larger and having a better flow.
Mrs. Smith chose a simple pattern for the iron railings to achieve a dramatic look and the unpretentious pattern allows the casual elegance of the home's decor to be the focus.
Mrs. Smith was delighted with Elliott's work. "In just two weeks it looked like a new house," she said. "Paul does such beautiful work."
In addition, Mrs. Smith appreciated the professional treatment. She said the final cost of the project was right in line with the price Elliott quoted her as an estimate and his work crew was consistently on time.
Although the success of his business depends on the larger jobs, Elliott said he still enjoys the artistic pleasure of working with iron. "I'd rather go out there and roll some iron just to see what it becomes," he said.
Some of his random creations have become door mats, lamps, Medieval themed torches, fireplace screens, and tools.
